2019: Now people are moving to, not away, from New Mexico
According to an article in the New Mexican, United Van Lines ranked New Mexico the No.10 state for inbound moves in 2019. In 2014, the Land of Enchantment was No. 10 for outbound moves. Who is moving here? According to the U.S. Census Bureau many are retirees, and many inbound movers come from neighboring western states such as Texas and California.
As a native New Mexican "born here all my life," the story of retirees and people from California and Texas moving to New Mexico, doesn't strike me as particularly remarkable. What I find interesting, is that people are not moving away.
My experience resonates with this statistic. My sister is 9 years older than me, and many, many of her high-school friends live in other states. She lives in Colorado, with best friends in Los Angeles and New York. But even though I am just a few years younger, I see many more of my peers staying local as they build careers and families. I have friends who went to New York and Los Angeles, and then came back to New Mexico and are building their lives here. I see it as a sign that our economy and community here in New Mexico is growing with a vibrancy that supports young people starting out and building lives as well as retirees. Go NM! #Newmexicotrue
